It is here that we find the story of Balaam son of Beor (Numbers 22-25). Balaam is such an interesting study. Balaam was asked by the Moabites and Midianites to curse the nation of Israel. These nations were afraid of Israel and knew they couldn’t be defeated by combat because the Lord was with them so they turned to spiritual things. Every time Balaam opened his mouth, though, the Lord only allowed him to speak blessings. Balaam even speaks of this in Numbers 23:20 – “Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.” The Lord protected Israel even from cursings.

In the midst of these blessings, God gives Balaam a prophecy. This prophecy wasn’t to be fulfilled in Balaam’s day, but in our day. Since Moab is the nation that lead this ill-conceived attempt to curse Israel, God speaks the judgment they will face in the last days. These same last days we are in. In the middle of this prophecy, Balaam speaks these words:

Numbers 24:15–19 (NKJV) — 15 So he took up his oracle and said: “The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor, And the utterance of the man whose eyes are opened; 16 The utterance of him who hears the words of God, And has the knowledge of the Most High, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Who falls down, with eyes wide open: 17 “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult. 18 “And Edom shall be a possession; Seir also, his enemies, shall be a possession, While Israel does valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob One shall have dominion, And destroy the remains of the city.”

What a prophecy! Balaam’s eyes were opened to see something that amazed him. Even Balaam exclaims his reaction: “Who falls down, with eyes wide open..!” Balaam was able to see Jesus Christ, a star out of Jacob. But Balaam saw far past the first coming of Jesus and also saw His second coming. He saw that Jesus is coming to conquer and defeat his enemies. He will destroy the last of the cities of the Moabites (part of modern day Jordan).  He will destroy all His enemies and will have dominion over the whole earth.

Do you not know the Lord of all the earth is coming? It is time to prepare, it is time to make ready. Don’t be caught unaware. Look to His coming and purify yourself.
