In this section, God continues giving His law through Moses to His chosen nation. But before giving the law in detail, God commands His people to move forward. So Moses then makes some requests from God.
Exodus 33:12–17 (NKJV) — 12 Then Moses said to the LORD, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” 14 And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.” 17 So the LORD said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”
Moses is essentially requesting four things from God.
- Let me know whom You will send with me.
- Show me Your way.
- Let me know You.
- Consider that this nation (Israel) is Your people.
And the Lord says He will go with Israel, and do all that Moses asked. He does this because He knows Moses’ name. Guess what? God knows your name too. God knew you before you were in your mother’s womb. He knows you now. Do you believe? As a believer, I am a child of God (John 1:12). As a believer and a child of God, I can ask of Jesus the same things Moses asked.
- Who will You send with me: Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to be with me (John 14.16).
- Show me You way: Jesus is the way (John 14.6).
- Let me know You: Jesus is standing at the door wanting me to know Him and I have let Him in (Rev 3:20).
- Consider that this nation (Israel) is Your people: Jesus remembers Israel and will keep His promises to them (Rom 9:27, 11:26) and that assures my promises from Him (John 14:1-4).
These questions Moses asked are questions we should all ask. They should all be things we desire of the Lord. Are you seeking this kind of relationship?
